Exclusive interview on “Al Mara’a” website with Liana Haddad, the founder of the handmade fashion brand, Jolia
Liana Haddad, American-Lebanese citizen born and raised in Boston, USA. She graduated and obtained her master’s degree there. She
then decided to return to her country, Lebanon, and launched her own project, Jolia Brand, at the age of 24 to design bags. The Elle Maraa website had this interesting interview with Liana to learn more about her and the idea of the project she launched:
First of all, you were born and raised in the United States of America. What made you return to your country, Lebanon, and establish a business there, especially in light of the difficult circumstances that the country is experiencing?
I returned from the United States to the country I love, “Lebanon.” I wanted to be at the service of my country and not leave it when it needs me. It is true that as a result of the unforeseen economic circumstances in Lebanon, many people had no choice but to leave their country behind. Importing became too expensive, so small businesses were at risk and local talent was exposed in order to survive.
However, artisans still struggled to find a steady source of income due to lack of jobs, demand and lack of time for their brands, so I didn’t want to give up on the country I love and the real people who belong to it.
Tell us how the idea of Jolia Brand started?
I thought of putting my experience, knowledge and skills to use in the service of my country and started looking for the talents of local artisans who work by creating timeless handmade designs for the rest of the world and that is when the idea of Jolia was born.
Who designs the bags? What materials are they made of?
Jolia bags are handmade bags – made of beads or crochet, we use different materials depending on the design. As of now we have 10 models and I am the one who designed them, I give them the ideas and the Lebanese craftsmen are the ones who bring them to reality with a special touch.
What makes Jolia different from other brands?
All our products have a nostalgic feel by incorporating traditional styles, preserving them and applying them to modern designs with a personal touch, as each bag has a never-ending love story.
Finally, we would like you to tell us what your future projects are?
Jolia started 6 months ago and has gained a lot of trust and respect. I am really happy and I am looking forward to gaining the confidence to go global and spread around the world, and familiarize Lebanon more. Jolia strives to be an organic community where qualified designed handmade pieces can be found on one platform. We strive to help bring out the best in our artists and encourage our clients to play a role in this mission.
